Buckminster Fuller's Self-Disciplines

'A remarkable facet of this document is that he wrote it very early in his life, long before he became well-known.'

I decided that Nature might support a man who was doing what Nature wanted to be done and concluded that I would be informed by Nature if I proceeded in the following manner:
1. Use myself as an experiment to see what, if anything, a healthy, young male human of average size,
experience, and capability with an economically dependent wife and new born child, starting without

you are fulfilling your significance if you apply yourself to converting all your experience to the highest advantage of others

You do not belong to you. You belong to the universe. The significance of you will remain forever a mystery to you, but you may assume you are fulfilling your significance if you apply yourself to converting all your experience to the highest advantage of others. - R. Buckminster Fuller

on to say that the fundamentals of science are so hopelessly
wrong and so contrary to nature, that nothing but a major

Non-Free Energy is Obsolete. Scarcity is a Lie, and obsolete. War is obsolete. Get with the program.

You never change things by fighting the existing reality. To change things, build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete.

Energy crisis?

There isn 't any energy crisis. It's simply a crisis of ignorance.

On how to be optimally effective

"Observation of my life to date shows that the larger the number for whom I work, the more positively effective I become. Thus, it is obvious that if I work always and only for all humanity, I will be optimally effective."

To change something, build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete.

The metaphysical

The metaphysical embraces all the weightless experiences of thought, including all the mathematics and the organization of data regarding all the physical experiments, science itself being metaphysical.

What would I do?

"If success or failure of this planet and of human beings depended on how I am and what I do...How would I be? What would I do?"

Choice between killingry and livingry

"Humanity has the option to become successful on our planet if we reorient world production away from weaponry - from killingry to livingry. Can we convince humanity in time?"

So long as space remains, So long as sentient beings remain, I will remain, In order to help, In order to serve, In order to make my own contribution. This is the vow of the Bodhisatva.
As “Spaceship Earth” spirals into a future of radiant possibility, we find ourselves merging with the dreams; ideals and principles inspired by the great master thinkers of humanity.

And the Earthian passengers who know about it, are doing nothing about it.

A vast overabundance of this Earthian cosmic energy income is now technically impoundable and distributable to humanity by presently proven technology. We are not allowed to enjoy this primarily because taxhungry government bureaucracies and moneydrunk big business can't figure a way of putting meters between these cosmic energy sources and the Earthian passengers, so nothing is done about it.

You must choose between making money and making sense

"You must choose between making money and making sense. The two are mutually exclusive."

Man is designed to be a success just like the hydrogen atom is designed to be a success

"What are the resources? What are the tasks necessary to make 100% of humanity a success? How can we ever do so without ever advantaging one human at the expense of another? How may we render all the world and all its treasures enjoyable available to all men without having one interfering with or trespassing upon the other? How may we reform the environment so that the integrity of all society is not violated by the free initiatives of the individual nor the integrity of the individual violated by the developing welfaring advantage and happiness of the many?

Opt for integrity

"If humanity does not opt for integrity we are through completely. It is absolutely touch and go. Each one of us could make the difference."

(He embarked on a search...) "the search for the principles governing the universe and help advance the evolution of humanity in accordance with them... finding ways of doing more with less to the end that all people everywhere can have more and more"

The motivating factor

"I was motivated in 1927 and ever since by the most mysterious drive we ever experience -- that of love. I don't think there's any influence upon my life that compares with... love."

What is near extinction?

Racism, pollution and the rest of it are themselves very close to extinction.

Better designers than God?

Humans who think they are better designers than God are the most to be pitied of liars - the liars who are believingly convinced by their own only-self-conveniencing fabrications.

INTRODUCTION

GUINEA PIG B*

Overspecialization leads to extinction

We have learned in biology and anthropology that extinction has been the consequence of overspecialization and our specialization is leading to extinction of the species. The only thing humans need is the ability to think. Unfortunately they think mostly about how to make a living and get along in the system rather than about what the universe is trying to tell us.

There is something patently insane about...

There is something patently insane about all the typewriters sleeping with all the beautiful plumbing in the beautiful office buildings and all the people sleeping in the slums.

...specialization precludes comprehensive thinking....

Of course, our failures are a consequence of many factors, but possibly one of the most important is the fact that society operates on the theory that specialization is the key to success, not realizing that specialization precludes comprehensive thinking.

Think of it.

Think of it. ... We are blessed with technology that would be indescribable to our forefathers. We have the wherewithal, the know-it-all, to feed everybody, clothe everybody, give every human on Earth a chance. We dwell instead on petty things. We kill each other. We build monuments to ourselves. What a waste of time. Think of it. What a chance we have...
